A tinfoil hat would be in order if the government was out to get you but if you think about it, the government doesn't give a rat's ass about a mid-20s stoner.
Quote me THE EXACT POST where I have stated that my fear is that the government will look for and go after mid-20s stoners. You are fabulating. I have stated, quite clearly, that my fear is that that information (the database information), can be used by employers, doctors, etc. THAT's what I have said. NOT that I think the cops will put surveillance to search for mid-20s stoners.

You have invented a false premise (that I'm afraid the government will set up surveillance to search for stoners in their mid-20s in order to arrest them) COMPLETELY out of the blue in order to satisfy your preconceived idea of me that I'm a tinfoil hat...

Physicists have discovered... something! That says something about... something! Come back in 3 years when we finally figure out how to explain it.

3 years later: oh, apparently that something we discovered 3 years ago was actually nothing.

I know we're not in Brazil but still... I'd like to show that footage to various passengers I took on my car, pointing to my dashcam, asking what it is and what's its purpose.

Java has a steep learning curve. Python is easy to learn but I don't know what the offers on the market look like for it.

If you're doing it only for the money, no matter the language, will be harder than if you do it driven by passion.
To answer your question, atm Java, PHP, MVC and ASP.NET are the top tech. on the marked (based on what I've seen in the last months)

I don't wanna sacrifice viability for ease of learning. Ease of learning is a plus but if a certain language seems to be looked for in the foreseeable future, I'll learn that. One more question: for the mobile app market? Is investing time to learn to make apps worth it? What do I need to learn, in a nutshell?

For mobile:
Android - Java
Windows Phone - C#
iPhone - Objective C (I believe you'll need some payed software to develop apps)

@Logica: Did you ever even study programming? I mean basic stuff like Pascal/C at least.

Hmm. That 0 doesn't look so good. :)

Javascript is okay if you want to be a frontend developer. Do you have a keen eye for aesthetics and know Photoshop?

The job offers for frontend developer are scarce to be honest. Only big companies hire frontend developer and when they do, they want truckloads of experience.

The good part about javascript is that it mixes with anything that has to do with web apps. The bad part is that learning Javascript for this career trajectory is like learning how to drive without having a car.

Considering you have 0 programming knowledge, go for any language that can handle server-side operations also. Php would be my first recomendation cause it has a smooth learning curve and isn't all that complicated. The job offers are plenty also and it is a tad easier for a newbie to get employed because it is mostly used by smaller companies.

Yep, I would suggest PHP too. I learned PHP by myself, just with some tutorials and and a notepad opened ...

LE. I didnt intended to brag or anything. Wanted to say that is not too hard to learn. And most of the things in PHP are very intuitive.

Thanks for the informative posts. I'll look into PHP then. About the fact that I have 0 experience in programming, well, the thing is that I have examples of "well, if HE can do it..." so it's not a matter of IF I can do it as much as it's a matter of will and dedication.

The reason why I'm looking to learn programming is that I'm not planning on doing what I'm currently doing for very long. I have always said at work that "when I'll learn to do x, it won't be as bad anymore", well, I've learned everything there is to learn, started becoming "good" at it. But I'm not content, I've always imagined that my job will be a lot more fulfilling once I get good at it. Well, it ain't. It's only interesting when I make a new type of machine, then if I have to make more machines like that it gets really boring. And I'd prefer working in an office rather than in production.
