Because people like the sensation from just before you get drunk. It's a fine line and once you pass it and get drunk, it's not pleasant anymore. For nobody. Experience helps you find that sweet spot. Since you're crying, I would imagine you're at the "God won't it ever stop?" part (unless you went to sleep already). When you'll wake up you'll be at the "i'll never drink again" spot.

Oh, and drinking alone at home is unpleasant and frowned upon. Just like drinking in the morning.
